Course on Recognizing Mobility Issues Among Senior Citizens

Serdang, January 31 - The Training and Learning Resources Committee (TERA) of MyAgeing™ organized a course entitled "Course on Recognizing Mobility Issues Among Senior Citizens." This course was delivered by Dr. Muhammad Hibatullah Romli, Senior Lecturer (Occupational Therapy), Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

A total of 19 participants, comprising UPM staff and members of the public, received insights into challenges related to handling senior citizens based on their capabilities. Subsequently, participants were emphasized on the importance of the concept of mobility for senior citizens. Participants were also exposed to proper lifting techniques and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for senior citizens to reduce injuries and minimize the risk of excessive burden on caregivers. Additionally, participants were briefed and experienced the "6 Minutes Walking Test" activity aimed at assessing physical performance, endurance, and mobility.

The last topic covered was related to transfers using a "Transfer Board," one of the methods facilitating transfers from wheelchairs to vehicles. This technique is crucial to understand and learn as it reduces the burden on caregivers, thus minimizing unwanted risks. Moreover, this technique does not require additional caregivers for transferring senior citizens and is highly practical to use.

Meanwhile, this course marks the first course held for the year 2024. For those interested in participating in courses organized by MyAgeing™, please submit your applications to the following email addresses: tera.myageing@upm.edu.my / myageing@upm.edu.my / dir.ippm@upm.edu.my
