The Institute of Gerontology (IG), Universiti Putra Malaysia was founded on 1st April 2002. In recognition of its contribution and role in the field of ageing, (IG) was rebranded as the Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing (MyAgeingTM) in 2015. The rebranding heralds a new chapter in the field of gerontology for the nation and the region. MyAgeingTM functions as a national center for research in gerontology, geriatrics and gerontechnology as well as driving innovations to address the multidimensional challenges and opportunities of population ageing. The institute aims to be an intellectual and physical hub for research, development, commercialization and innovation (RCDI) on ageing.
Under the 11th Malaysia Plan, the institute was mandated to conduct research to support active and productive ageing. MyAgeingTM focuses on multi and interdisciplinary research with a life span approach to the study of old age and ageing to better understand the risk factors and outcomes of diseases and conditions that affect older adults. The institute monitors and coordinates development of the field through national, regional and international networks. MyAgeingTM has achieved major accomplishments in ageing research, training and social innovations through the support of global partners such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations International Institute on Ageing (INIA), Malta and the Citi Foundation.
The institute offers postgraduate study opportunities to train future generations of gerontologist by harnessing the expertise of university-wide faculty members. It is also engaged in professional as well as community outreach activities that translate research into action through partnership with the government, industry and civil society.
